With friends such as these…

The human body is full of and is surrounded by electric currents and electro-magnetic fields. In other words, ENERGY. This energy is constantly being picked up and shared by other people. That’s why we sometimes say things like “He’s not on my wavelength” or “She’s giving me bad vibes.” When you are trying to take yourself forward and bring happiness and success into your life, you would do well to think hard about your friends and what each of them means to you.

At least once a year, we recommend that you make a list of everyone that you have come into contact with or spoken to on more than one occasion in the last month. This list can then be used as an acquaintance audit. This may sound ruthless, but you should really consider what effect each one of those people is having on your life. We have discovered that it is helpful to put people into one of these three categories:

DRAGGERS, SUPPORTERS and IGNITERS.

You know what it’s like to spend time with a dragger. The conversation is dull, often negative and there are very few laughs. Dragger’s make you experience their low energy levels and to understand how it feels so they can elicit your sympathy. They are draggers because they literally drag you down. The longer you spend with them the more your energy will be sapped away. You are best advised to say goodbye to these people. The sooner the better. They are not interested in you, only in inflicting their pain upon you, or any other willing listener for that matter.

Supporters are brilliant. They cheer you on, tell you you’re wonderful and make you feel good. They listen to you intently and agree with your views. They are interested in you. They make you feel happy, although they don’t excite you or spark new ideas your energy levels remain neutral and therefore supporters are good people to know.

Your life is much better though, when you find igniters. Igniters are people who make things happen. They go through life taking full responsibility for everything they do. They are alive with curiosity, and they are open to new experiences. They are successful and creative and are continually looking at ways to make their lives better. When they find a great way of doing something, they will tell you about it. When they see something they like about your life, they will ask you all about it and they will complement you. They share their zest for life with you and their energy is contagious. Your energy levels are boosted. Igniters are interested in you, and you are interested in them. Igniters are great people and you should hang on to them!

Not sure who is a dragger, supporter or igniter? Easy, take the mobile phone test. When you look through the contacts in your phone, imagine how you would feel if each one called you right now. Would you answer immediately not matter what you were doing? If so, that person is an igniter! If they rang you and you would take their call except when you were really busy, then they are supporters! Lastly, if you see the name, let out a sigh and think, ‘I just don’t have the energy to speak to them right now’, you have identified a dragger! Just also consider if you feel like that just seeing their name, the detrimental effect they have on you when you are with them in person.

upcoming workshops this year, where we go into much greater detail on our approach, tips, techniques and methods.

Nik & Eva Speakman

We have studied and worked together since 1992. Between us we have studied human behaviour and psychology for seven decades. We both share an uncontainable passion to offer hope and to help people lead happier and less inhibited lives.

After many remarkable breakthroughs we created our own behavioural change therapy, ‘Schema Conditioning.’® Subsequent work with trauma victims and their related symptoms, led to the creation of two further trauma-based therapies.

‘Schema Conditioning Psychotherapy.’®

‘Visual Schema Displacement Therapy (VSDT)’®

‘Visual Schema Detachment & Restructuring (VSDR)’®

Qualifications from the creation of our therapies, resulted in training psychology professors, doctors and masters students at Universities in Amsterdam and Utrecht. In 2015, this training produced the two sets of scientific studies conducted into the workings of our therapy; the first two study papers highlighting the remarkable efficacy, was published in the Journal of Behaviour Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry in June 2019. A further third study was then published in the European Journal of Psychotraumatology in April 2021, with a fourth clinical study with hospital patients is currently underway and will be completed by the end of 2022.

In addition to members of the public, we work with, and have treated many high-profile clients and ‘A’ list clients around the world, having had prodigious successes. We are resident therapists on ITV’s multi award-winning ‘This Morning’ and have been for over a decade, we have also had own television shows, one of which, ‘The Speakmans’, also aired on ITV and several countries worldwide. Over the last two decades we have appeared on numerous other television shows as experts, such as the multi award-winning Saturday Night Takeaway.

Our mission is to illuminate that there is ALWAYS HOPE and that overcoming trauma and improving quality of life is entirely possible. Many people have either never been given hope, or worse had hope taken away from them, our aim is to correct that by sharing our message in any way we possibly can, including live workshops, theatre tours, books, podcasts, radio, television, social media and YouTube.

At the heart of all we do, is our relentless mission to offer HOPE to as many people as we possibly can.
